If you’ve owned a pair of jogging shoes, you are likely familiar with the brand ASICS.

The Japanese company formed in 1949 has earned over 400 billion, but the brand name is not Japanese. It’s Latin.

The name ASICS is an acronym for anima sana in corpore sano, which translates as: “a healthy soul within a healthy body.” It goes back to the Greek of Thales’ who wrote:

τίς εὐδαίμων, “ὁ τὸ μὲν σῶμα ὑγιής, τὴν δὲ ψυχὴν εὔπορος, τὴν δὲ φύσιν εὐπαίδευτος”
What man is happy? “He who has a healthy body, a resourceful mind and a docile nature.”

Are you unhappy? As yourself two questions:

  1. Do I work with the body I have to make it strong and healthy?
  2. Do I read great books, speak with intelligent people, take classes, and cultivate my mind?
