This is a short one to my fellow American Men that bugs me often even when I enter my own traditional Catholic parish:
If you would wear a suit and tie to a job interview, or for your work, you should wear a suit and tie for Mass and Worship. If you can afford a suit and tie for a wedding, you should wear a suit and tie for Mass and Worship. Every Sunday. Because Jesus is more important than your friends getting married, and Jesus is more important than your boss. Have some priorities.
If you need to, go to a thrift shop, but get that suit. In our culture it’s not a statement of your wealth, but one of respect. You’re asking how things have gotten to such a sorry state in today’s Church? Yes, it is largely the clergy’s fault, but responsibility lies with us the laity too. This Lent, start making reparation. Go out shopping if necessary. Shine those shoes every time (Here’s an area I myself could improve). Dress up, not down for Jesus.
